Signs your Car is Headed for a Breakdown

March 29th, 2018 by

Car trouble. Engine failure. Major Repairs. We’ve all been there at some point; stuck on the side of the road and wondering just how our vehicle got to this point. While even the best maintained cars can experience a breakdown, you can avoid being caught unaware by paying attention to the signals that your car is headed for a breakdown. To make sure your car gets help before disaster strikes, look for these signs:

Changes to Sounds and Feel of Brakes

While brake issues aren’t the same as a total breakdown, issues with this part of your car are dangerous to ignore and that’s why they’re on this list. To avoid being caught with malfunctioning brakes, it’s best to keep an eye on these things:

  • Squealing or grinding noises: Both of these mean it’s time to have your brakes looked at and grinding noises are likely from worn out brake pads.
  • Pedal seems to pulse: this could be a malfunctioning rotor.
  • Steering is difficult: if the car seems to pull away from you as you steer, this could mean a brake problem, tire issue or something else that needs to be looked at.

Dashboard Lights

The lights in your dashboard are there for a reason so, it’s best not to ignore them! Whenever you see a flashing light come on in your car, get it looked at professionally as soon as possible.

If your car is leaking oil or other unexpected fluid, it’s likely time to take it in. Larger leaks and puddles under your car are especially important to check as leaving them be could lead to much more expensive problems.

Slow Starting

A variety of issues can cause your car to lose its ability to start quickly. If you notice your car giving you trouble upon starting, your starter, battery or alternator are likely to blame and should be checked.

If there’s a strange smell (and it’s not coming from the fast food wrapper mountain in your backseat) then this could be a sign of something awry. For example, a burning rubber smell could mean the belts aren’t moving as easily as they should and could soon cause a breakdown.
